The Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem (NDS) is a community-based, client-centered, holistic public defense office providing free legal representation to residents of Northern Manhattan in criminal, civil and family proceedings. NDS has two internships available this summer.
Immigration Defense Team
NDS seeks to hire a legal intern to join the Immigration Defense Team in Summer 2022. As part of NDS’ commitment to holistic representation, the Immigration Defense Team defends Northern Manhattan residents facing removal due to contact with the criminal legal system. In addition to representing clients in removal proceedings, the Immigration Defense Team advises attorneys in our Criminal Defense Practice on the immigration consequences of a criminal conviction. The practice also represents clients in a number of affirmative applications such naturalization, adjustment of status, work permit applications, and more, primarily for clients with criminal history. The legal intern will be involved in client intake, legal research on questions of criminal/immigration law and direct client representation in removal proceedings and affirmative applications.

Family Defense Team
Summer interns are matched with Family Defense attorneys to work with throughout the summer. Interns will participate in all aspects of direct representation, including legal research and writing, preparing for hearings and trials (with the possibility to appear on the record pursuant to the student practice order), investigations, client interactions, and collaborating with out-of-court advocates and other practices. Interns will work from our office in central Harlem, spending significant time at New York County Family Court (assuming in-person operations have fully and safely resumed). If in-person operations have not resumed, the internship will be conducted remotely. The goal of the internship is to provide the intern with an experience as close to the actual practice of an NDS Family Defense attorney as possible.
